Non-Health Information Science students or applicants seeking Health Information Science coursework

Applicants who are not seeking a degree in Health Informatics may apply to take up to two 500-level courses (1.5 units each) in the School of Health Information Science (HINF). For these applicants, HINF 572 should be the first of any courses taken. Not all courses are available to non-HINF students.

*Alumni from HINF (BSc, MSc, MN/MSc, or PhD) are not required to take HINF 572

Please note at this time HINF 572 is currently offered once a year in the fall term.

If you are interested in taking HINF courses as a non-degree student or are a UVic student from outside our School, you should first talk with our school's .

How to Apply – HINF Alumni

HINF Alumni Applicants (Non-Degree)

Please submit application materials at least 8 weeks before the start of the term to allow time for faculty review.

To apply, you need to complete a UVic Graduate Studies online application.

Step 1

Standard UVic Graduate Studies Application Package:
You will need to obtain the appropriate transcripts, assessment reports, test scores and other documents as outlined in the application package.

If you are an international student, please visit the UVic Graduate admissions page for the information on minimum requirements, proper submission of your documents, Language proficiency, visas, and more.

Step 2

Additional materials required by Health Information Science:
  1. Letter of Intent (1-2 pages) which:
    • provides your rationale for wanting to pursue graduate coursework in Health Informatics;
    • specifies which course(s) and term you are interested in.
  2. Personal Resume (maximum 4 pages) which includes:
    • your educational background, employment history, professional/academic affiliations and other achievements such as publications or awards.

Step 3

Submit the online Graduate Studies Application Package along with the School’s requirements to the Graduate Admissions and Records Office (GARO).

How to Apply – UVic graduate students not in School of Health Information Science (HINF)

Start the process early as application materials should be submitted at least 8 weeks before the start of the term to allow time for faculty review.

Contact the Graduate Advisor (hinfgradadvisor@uvic.ca) about your wish to take HINF 572 + one other HINF graduate course.

The Graduate Advisor will provide you with details on materials needed for your application package and then share your request at HINF faculty with course instructors for approval.   If approved, you will be instructed on how to proceed with your request and receive instructor signatures for course registration.  

Please do not contact the course instructors directly for permission as you must first have approval from the School.

How to Apply – Non-UVic Student Applicants

Western Deans' Agreement Student Applicants

Please submit application materials at least 12 weeks before the start of the term to allow time for faculty review.

To apply, please complete the Western Deans Agreement paperwork from your home institution.  Additionally, please send the following materials directly to the School of Health Information Science (hisgrad@uvic.ca)

  1. Unofficial transcripts from each post-secondary school you have attended.
